Congratulations, you're engaged and so in love and excited to marry the love of your life. Shortly after, you're trying to choose a wedding venue, book a photographer, choose wedding colors and floral arrangements, and overwhelm and stress can creep in. You're in the thick of the wedding planning process and your wedding to-do list doesn't seem to get any smaller, you're managing expectations of others, and experiencing an entirely new and unknown world. While I hope no couples have to deal with any stress or overwhelm, self care is incredibly important at this time. Here are a few ways to focus on self care and get back to enjoying wedding planning.
1. THE BASICS: EAT, EXERCISE, AND SLEEP
You would be surprised how quickly the simple things like eating, exercise, and sleep go out the window when you are planning a wedding. It's important to make sure you are getting your basics if you want to tackle the wedding planning process and avoid feeling strung out. It's easy to miss a meal, skip the gym, or stay up to late when your figuring out guest lists, floral arrangements, and keeping mom happy, but remember to refocus on you and what will keep you sane.
Eating - Fueling your body with nutritious whole foods that will keep your body healthy and happy while you check off your wedding to-do list.
Exercise - Walks with your partner or friends, classes (yoga, barre, dance, etc) or visiting the gym, it doesn't matter, but its important to keep your body moving. Exercise puts us in a different headspace that helps remove anxiety and stress levels. It's easy to fall into a Pinterest, email, or internet hole that you never leave, but try to move for at least 30 minutes a day.
Sleep - Create an organized plan and schedule so that you don't have to stay up late or last minute working on wedding projects. Getting a full nights sleep will keep you relaxed, focused, and stable to tackle any wedding project.
2. FOCUS ON YOUR PRIORITIES AS A COUPLE
Clear communication with your partner is key. Focusing and even listing your top priorities for your wedding vision will help keep the two of you on the same page. These priorities will be your guiding light through the wedding planning process that you can check in at anytime and make sure you are focused on whats important together.
3. BE YOU
Wedding planning comes with a lot of new experiences. Remember to stay true to who you are and what makes you happy. Now is not the time to try crazy diets, or be afraid to say no. Everyone is going to interject their two cents and "help" throughout your wedding planning, make sure you listen to your intuition.
4. ASK FOR HELP
Planning a wedding requires help! Don't be afraid to receive help from your partner, your family and friends, and even reach out to your vendors. A wedding is a labor of love and teamwork. Make sure you are communicating and using your team.
5. ENJOY YOUR ENGAGEMENT
Remember that you are in love and engaged! The engagement period can be a quick and fleeting time that is important to enjoy. Spend time with your partner doing things you love together, date nights, and taking a break from any wedding planning or talk. It's important to still live your life and create designated times for breaks from wedding planning. Nurture and develop your relationship together, your marriage will be a lifetime while the wedding is one day.
